  • We considered about a dozen before opening. None seemed right until we stumbled upon an article by local historian/art enthusiast Bob Wood describing the Legend of The Swamp Door. Intrigued, we researched it ourselves.

The original Swamp Door was a massive rock formation, like a ravine, several miles southeast of us near Shaeffer Road on Swamp Pike. Conastoga-traveling settlers moving into our area from Philadelphia and points south reported traveling through the impressive natural gateway to reach this part of Montgomery County.

It got its name from Pennsylvania Dutch and German settlers who called it the “door to the meadow” (pronounced, as best we can tell, “schvammer tor”). But they were misunderstood by English settlers who heard “Swamp Door,” and the name stuck. No swamps here. Lots of “Swamp” names on streets and creeks, though.

No known photos exist of the place itself, which was likely blown up to move artillery through this historic region sometime after the Revolutionary War but before the Civil War. (You can see the rubble field near Shaeffer Road to this day.) And, for many years, the story passed out of local memory.

Naming our business THE SWAMP DOOR has allowed us to give this important story back to the community while reminding everyone that we see ourselves as a vital gateway to the many antiques/vintage markets in our region. Stop here first for maps to other shopping locales and tourist destinations!

  • Find us at 2030 Swamp Pike, Gilbertsville, PA 19525, directly in front of Freed’s Market and next door to Our Place Restaurant. We’re conveniently located near most local highways (422, 100, 309, 29, 73 and the Northeast Extension) and situated about 2-3 hours from NYC, 1 hour from Lancaster or Delaware, 45 minutes from Philly, and less than 10 minutes from the Philadelphia Premium Outlets.

  • We’re open Wednesdays through Sundays 10-5. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

  • Alas, no. We rent space to vendors who then sell their items here. That’s our business model. At some future point, we may invite the public to sell via our NEW online web store. But not yet. Feel free to check back for updates.

  • Thanks for asking! At this time, our entire business focus is to sell items for our vendors, however they acquire them: private sales, estate sales, auctions, flea markets, etc. If they’re interested in buying, you’ll find business cards displayed in their rented spaces so you can contact them and potentially arrange a meeting offsite. Not all vendors buy, so we cannot supply you with a list. Right now, displayed business cards are the best and fairest way to handle this type of request. Thanks for understanding.

  • THANK YOU for asking. We are a small business that truly cares about our community, and we wish we could donate to everything. But due to overwhelming requests in recent years, donations must be limited to what our budget can support and organizations with 501(c)(3) status. If you’d like to be considered for a gift basket or gift certificate donation, please email us details. Be sure to submit the information at least three months in advance to give ample time to review. We can’t promise we can help. But we’ll try.
